Whats the Difference between Organic cotton and Regular cotton?
Can you believe that it takes 2700 liters of water to produce just one regular cotton shirt? At first, I didn't really understand the difference that using organic cotton really made. But, after researching I was pleased to find that organic cotton has a much better impact on the enviornment as a whole than GMO cotton. Organic cotton beats out GMO cotton on each item in the ecofriendly/ sustainbility checklist from water consumption, water pollution, global warming contribution, and health and safety of labor workers harvesting the plant. The toxic chemicals used in traditional/ GMO cotton farming are a massive health risk to farmers everywhere. There is a link between consistent inhalation and consumption of these chemicals and cancer, neurological diseases, and reproductive complications. The extensive amount of pesticides and insecticides used in traditional/GMO cotton farming has made it one of the world’s dirtiest crops. Non-organic cotton farming accounts for 24% of the world’s insecticide sales and 11% of global pesticide consumption. Organic cotton currently makes up less than 1% of the world’s global cotton production, while the other 99% is poisoning water supplies, wasting resources, and harming farmers. The more brands switch to organic cotton, fewer pesticides and microplastics will be released into our environment. That is why it was so important to us here at Designa Aura to make sure that we offer organic cotton shirts to do our part in decreasing negative impact to our home planet.
